What I most love about CapCut AI video generator is its AI-driven background removal feature which eliminates the need for a green screen, allowing me to replace any background with an image or color of my choice.

Something to note about Capcut is that the free version includes watermarks on exported videos. which can be removed only with a paid subscription. This may potentially pose a barrier for you if you’re a budget-conscious user.

## **2. Runway**

[Runway](https://runwayml.com/) can be called a virtual sorcerer's wand for video editing! It has the potential to be an entire AI video production studio, so it can basically create an entire movie without filming a single frame — if you have the time, that is. Runway can generate videos and animations from simple text prompts, create animations from still images, generate lip-syncing avatars based on a recording of your voice, and even allow you to train your own AI models. 

&nbsp;

Runway might be a little intimidating in the beginning. That’s because it has an array of features that take time to understand, execute and implement, and that could be slightly time-taking and if I can say, complex.

Another aspect to note is that while Runway offers a range of pricing plans, the advanced features that truly set it apart are locked behind higher-tier subscriptions, making it less accessible for small businesses or individual creators on a tight budget.

## **3. Invideo AI**

[Invideo AI](https://invideo.io/ai/) is an excellent tool for generating a starting point for your videos. It helps you to quickly create a basic structure for your videos, which can then be further customized and polished. The  features allow you to input simple prompts, from which the tool generates an initial draft that includes relevant footage, transitions, and effects. 

&nbsp;

A few standout features of Invideo AI are an extensive stock media library that offers a range of options to choose from, AI-powered script generation which creates a complete script for your videos and, voiceover addition. Their AI voiceover generator is particularly good because it has an option to add your own voice which it then uses to narrate scripts in. The narration is also decent, with multiple accents and focussing well on the feeling, intent, and emotion behind each word.

Overall, the tool is great for YouTubers and people who want to start off their video making journey with minimal effort. 

&nbsp;

One of the shortcomings of Invideo AI is its dependency on a stable internet connection, as the tool is cloud-based. This can be a significant limitation for users in areas with unreliable internet access. I also noticed that rendering videos on Invideo AI can sometimes be slow, especially for longer or high-resolution projects, so keep enough time in hand before you expect a final video. 

## **4. Wondershare Filmora**

[Wondershare Filmora](https://filmora.wondershare.net/de/ad/videobearbeitungsprogramm-brand.html) has been a staple in the video editing world for over 15 years. Despite its long history, it's continuously evolving, with a suite of AI features that enhance video quality without requiring professional training or extensive time investments. 

&nbsp;

Filmora is a popular choice among full-time influencers and video editors for advanced-level video editing. It is also a preference because the tool keeps evolving based on new technological developments, and therefore is easily able to meet the demanding standards of modern digital media.

&nbsp;

Some of Filmora’s features include 'AI smart cutout', which allows you to cut objects out of scenes simply by painting their area on the screen, and 'AI audio denoise', which helps control background noise. 'AI audio stretch' lets you extend music to match scene transitions, while AI motion tracking enables face blurring for privacy or fun effects. They also have AI remove background which allows you to create imaginative scenes without hefty budgets.

However, do note that Filmora's performance can be sluggish when handling large files or high-resolution videos, leading to slower rendering times and potential crashes at times.

## **5. Canva Magic Studio**

Easy to use. Neat interface. Quick results.

Those were the three things I liked best about [Canva Magic Studio](https://www.canva.com/magic/). 

&nbsp;

Canva Magic Studio, though currently in a very basic state, looks very promising as an AI video tool. Having been a fan of Canva for infographics, presentations and social posts since the past few years, I have full confidence that their AI video tool will evolve too. 

&nbsp;

As of now, Canva Magic Studio gives you amazing results when it comes to video quality and is also very quick to generate the final video. The good video quality comes from its integration with [Runway](https://zapier.com/blog/best-ai-video-generator/#runway) (our #2 in the list).

&nbsp;

To show you an example, I used the prompt: "A cute rabbit watching a video on a laptop”. And the [result](https://www.canva.com/design/DAGGCqwwf4A/GS7q42J5C9nx26gxJGR9lA/watch) was surprisingly very apt!

Canva Magic Studio is a great option if you want to bulk-create your social media posts – create a chunk of Instagram reels or Facebook ads in a go or create similar kinds of videos using a single template. The template options Canva offers have a wide range and are decent for beginners to start with.

## Sora – Open AI’s video generator

Open AI sparked a wave of excitement around AI with ChatGPT, demonstrating its incredible potential in natural language processing. Now, it's taking things a step further with [Sora, an innovative AI](https://openai.com/index/sora/) video creator.

Open AI recently shared a series of tweets showing the potential of Sora and I must say, I am amazed. Be it [several giant mammoths](https://x.com/OpenAI/status/1758192960116785459) rushing through a snowy meadow or a [fluffy monster](https://x.com/OpenAI/status/1758192964222988506) behind a melted candle, the kind of videos Sora will be able to create is astounding! It looks like it will be able to take detailed prompts into consideration, just like it did with ChatGPT, to create exactly what the user needs.

As Sora continues to evolve and improve, it will undoubtedly shape the future of video production, showing way to new forms of storytelling and engagement in the years to come.

You don't need to know much about the human eye to use [video compression standards](https://api.video/what-is/video-encoding/). However, if you want to understand why they are designed the way they are, or tune your compression, knowing a little bit about the human eye goes a long way. Here are 5 facts about the human eye that directly influence our compression standards. 

## 1. When it comes to colors, the human eye sees green best, red second best, and a little bit of blue. 

**Impact**: *Algorithms and video gear that focus on capturing green more than other colors*. Humans process brightness and color differently. Because we are most sensitive to green, the way we see brightness is determined by how much green we see in something. As a result, cameras capture more green than other colors. Part of why we use green screens is because they appear so bright for people, they don't require as much lighting compared to other choices. We also use green screens because the green channel has more information, allowing for a cleaner key around a subject. The way we process color not only impacts what the camera captures, but how we set up color encoding. We tend to create algorithms that preserve green more than the other colors, because that's what we're most sensitive to!   

## 2. The highest resolution the human eye is capable of seeing is 576 megapixels. 

**Impact**: *Researchers and developers are working to create 8K TV and a codec to compress it*. While your first thought might be that the 576 megapixels is a lot, it's not the resolution we see with most of the time. That's what you see with a very small area in the center of your eye called the fovea. The fovea only covers about 1% of the retina and you can only see about 1/60th of a degree with it. In the real world, this would be like looking at a dot about .07 inches wide from a distance of 20 feet. Most of the time the resolution you see at is between 5 and 15 megapixels. Because of this, it's believed by many that 8K TV will be the end of the line in terms of quality. If you can't see past this level why create it when it's harder to capture, compress and deliver?

## 3. Your brain fills in missing information for the blind spot caused by your optic nerve. 

**Impact**: *Video compression algorithms use their own version of 'filling in' with predictive coding.* Many video compression algorithms use keyframes. A keyframe contains complete information for that frame. Frames that come after (and sometimes before) are stored based on the difference between them and the key frame. When motion occurs, many compression algorithms work to predict what that motion will be and store information based on predictions. This is similar to how your brain fills in and predicts data. 

## 4.  The human eye is more sensitive to luminance (brightness) than chrominance (color).

**Impact**: *The YUV color encoding system is built based on how human sight works.* The system takes into account that humans are less sensitive to color, allowing reduced bandwidth for color components. If there are transmission errors or compression artifacts they are less obvious than they would be with the RGB color system. What to keep and what to throw away in video compression that uses YUV is based on what the human eye is most and least sensitive to.

## 5.  The human eye can see about 30-60 frames per second (FPS). 

**Impact**: *Most content is [streamed](https://api.video/product/live-stream/) at 24, 30 or 60 fps.* 
There is an ongoing debate about how many frames per second the human eye can see. Gamers in particular will claim people are able to see more. Many people confuse fps with Hz. Hz is short for Hertz and is a unit of frequency. When applied to a monitor or projector, it represents the refresh rate for your screen or display, not the number of frames displayed per second. In any case, while there may be a debate regarding fps, the limitation of the human eye, or beliefs regarding its limitation result in most content streaming at 60 fps or under. Video games may stream faster, but it's still debatable as to whether people can see past 60 fps or beyond 90 Hz.

## 1. Create a minimal React app

As the first step, we need to create a new React app. Run the following command for the same. 

Now add the MediaPipe and the api.video React player packages

## 2. Add a video player

You’re going to use the official [api.video’s React player](https://github.com/apivideo/api.video-react-player) in this application, but feel free to use your favorite one and adapt the callbacks to it.

&nbsp;

Replace the code inside `App.tsx` with the following.
The `playerRef` allows us to control the [api.video player](https://api.video/product/player/).

Run your application with the npm run start command and go to `http://localhost:3000/`, you should see a video that you can play, pause or mute. 

## 3. Record your facial expressions

To control the player with your facial expressions, you need to stream your face through your webcam and pass this streamed data to the trained machine-learning model.

&nbsp;

Add a `<video />` HTML tag to `App.tsx`. 
Its `webcamRef` allows the video element to be targeted.
Apply a `display: "none"` inline style to hide the element, and an `autoPlay` attribute so the webcam stream time is updated. 

&nbsp;

**Note:** You can remove the `display: "none"` style and customize your CSS, it doesn’t matter.

## 4. Load the machine-learning model

Before we can use the machine-learning model, we must wait for it to finish loading. These models can be large and take a moment to get everything needed to run.

&nbsp;

Put this logic inside a `useEffect` and store the `faceLandmarker` class as a React stateful value.

## 5. Start detecting the webcam stream

Once the machine-learning model has been loaded and the `faceLandmarker` class has been instantiated, you can start detecting the stream.

&nbsp;

Create a new `useEffect`

Run your application with the `npm run start` command, go to `http://localhost:3000/`, and open your console. You should see a lot of console logs appearing each millisecond.

&nbsp;

Each one of them logs an array of objects of type:

## 6. Use the facial expression detection results

You now have access to a list of facial expression detection results. Use them to do whatever you want and in this case, to control your video player.

Let’s assume that you want to play the video when you smile, and pause it when you do a kiss.

Check the facial expression detection results on each frame and play or pause your video depending on the score of the wanted result by replacing your console.log with the following.

Once again, run your application with the `npm run start` command, go to `http://localhost:3000/`, and try to smile at your webcam. It should trigger the player’s `play` callback and play the video. Then, try to do a kiss ( 😗 ) in front of your webcam, and the video should pause.

## 7. Display the results

It can be helpful to have a visual representation of the detection results. Display these results as a list and highlight the detected facial expressions by adding a `<ul />` HTML tag to your JSX and creating a new ref to target it.

Add the code to update the HTML according to the results.

Now, you should see a list of results displayed in your application, with a green highlight on the ones with more than 60% confidence.

We use JavaScript here because it can be easily integrated into virtually any web application. Additionally, its adaptability to different platforms and its ability to interact with HTML and CSS empower you to create rich, interactive web experiences that cater to diverse user needs.

## 1. Build the application’s structure

Start by creating a simple `index.html` file

Start your application by running the `npx http-server` command and open the dedicated `http://localhost` port to see your application running. A “Hello World!” alert should appear.

&nbsp;

**Note:** If you don’t have the `npx` package already installed on your computer, you can install it by running `npm i -g npx` in a terminal.

## 2. Add the external JS scripts

Import the MediaPipe script by adding these lines at the top of `index.js`

Import the api.video-player-sdk script by adding the following <script /> tag to your index.html file.

Note: We’re using the api.video’s player in this article, but feel free to use your favorite one and adapt the callbacks to it.

## 3. Add a video player

Add a `<div />` tag to `index.html`. It will be targeted by the [api.video player SDK](https://api.video/catalog/player-sdk/) to display the video you're going to control with your facial expressions.

Target the element in index.js with the following code.

Run your application with `npx http-server` and you should see a video that you can play, pause, etc...

## 4. Record your facial expressions

To control the player with your facial expressions, you need to stream your face through your webcam and pass this streamed data to the trained machine-learning model.

## Projects

A ‘Project’ is a container within your workspace that allows you to isolate a set of videos, live streams, and player themes. Each Project holds its own API keys for authentication.

Creating different Projects is especially helpful if you want to create a clear separation between different customers, companies, or even working environments. The way you choose to organize your videos, streams, and players with Projects will be completely at your disposal.


## Members

A ‘Member’ is any person who can access the api.video service. So, you can make others a member of your project and grant them the ability to access and contribute towards effective collaboration and communication.

There are two types of members you can add to your projects:**

**Collaborators**: It is possible to add as many collaborators as you want per account, to a project. You can invite and work together with collaborators in the common workspace.


## Custom Domains

‘Custom Domains’ is a feature that lets you stream videos or live streams from your own domain (such as videos.yourdomain.com/ or livestreams.yourdomain.com/).

It lets you brand your video URL, comply with network security and increase your SEO ranking.


## Analytics (Limited offer)

Analytics is an Add-On that allows you to see how your videos and streams are performing. It shows you the number of plays, how your videos perform in each country, device, and many other things through your dashboard.

## The rise of ASICs in the video industry

In the past few years, the internet's growth sparked a rise in digital video demand. As platforms like YouTube and Netflix rose, companies leaned more toward CPU-based encoding due to its versatility. However, as streaming services gained popularity, CPU encoding's limitations started getting noticed. 

&nbsp;

Video encoding relying on CPU power is no longer a sustainable approach, as superior alternatives are now available that come without any compromises. A great example of this is Google. Google has developed its own Video Processing Unit (VPU) known as [Argos](https://9to5google.com/2021/04/22/youtube-google-custom-chip/) – a groundbreaking innovation. Through the integration of these VPUs, Google has significantly amplified transcoding capabilities per server, cut down operational expenses, reduced electricity consumption, and ultimately improved the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Following in Google's footsteps, Meta has also embraced this transformation. 

&nbsp;

What does this mean? It simply means that ASICs reduces the resource consumption of video encoding (see graph below) and that’s why companies are adopting it. 



Now what is the secret behind these VPUs that are replacing CPUs? VPUs are, in fact, ASICs-based chips specifically engineered for a singular purpose: decoding and encoding video frames. They support various codecs such as h.264, vp9, and AV1, among others. 

&nbsp;

Their power consumption is lower than that of CPUs, and their capacity is substantially greater. Consequently, you can expect VPUs to reduce electricity consumption by 10x to 100x, depending on the codec and the specific VPU in use.

&nbsp;

The best part is that the quality of the video output in VPUs matches that of CPU encoding. (We will delve into the technical details in an upcoming blog post.)

## What made us start ASIC based encoding at api.video

- ASICs also known as VPU (Video Processing Unit) are one order of magnitude more power efficient than CPU based transcoding. 

&nbsp;

- Using dedicated hardware allows us to increase the density which in turn reduces our environmental footprint. As a corollary, it increases our transcoding capacity.

&nbsp;

- Specialised hardware helps improve the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). When we increase the capacity and density of a server, there is a fewer requirement of servers and less rack space. So it reduces capital expenditure and operational expenditure.

A Guide to Video Encoding & Video Codecs

How fast does api.video encode video? 2H 2020 data

ASICs-based encoding: Building a greener tomorrow through reduced carbon footprint

Api.video started with a mission to empower product builders to effortlessly integrate video into their applications or services. To achieve this, we built and provided a global video backbone with an easy-to-use API for video delivery, transcoding, and live streaming. With this API, our customers are free to upload their videos at will and count on us for them to be quickly available for delivery. However, this becomes a formidable challenge when customers inundate us with their video catalogues at once.

&nbsp;

In tackling this challenge in the past, we initially relied on the most common solution: CPUs. But the limitation with CPUs lies in their inefficiency for video transcoding, particularly with the advent of new video codecs. 

&nbsp;

We had to overcome this challenge and so we started looking at other alternatives: GPUs, FPGA and ASICs.

&nbsp;

## FPGA vs. GPU vs. ASICS: A comparison

When we started with our research on FPGA, GPU and ASICs, we gathered information from technical marketing presentations on some products (i.e Intel flex series cards not yet available on the market at that time) and ran benchmarks in our lab. Mixing real and marketing measures could have been misleading. The Codensity G4 and G5 chips from [Netint](https://netint.com/) turned out to be clear winners by an order of magnitude when it came to power efficiency and performance per dollar.

So, we decided to continue the theoretical study with real benchmarks with NETINT VPUs (video processing units) and transcoders, to validate this decision.

&nbsp;

## The journey of switching from CPU to ASICs

The decision to choose ASICs for [our video infrastructure](https://api.video/blog/company/api-video-proprietary-infrastructure/) came after rigorous research.

&nbsp;

Our journey began with the conventional use of CPUs. But as the demand for enhanced performance grew, our team delved into an extensive study, exploring and comparing transcoding solutions like FPGA, GPU, and ASICs. 

&nbsp;

Recognizing the need for a solution that aligned with our goals, we benchmarked the [chips from Netint as their product was the clear winner of our study](https://api.video/blog/company/asics-based-video-encoding/). The G4 performances were satisfying. We could have gone into production with the T408 cards based on G4, but NETINT’s Quadra G5-based transcoders were even more appealing with its AV1 support and higher density. The AI chips associated with the G5 on the T1U cards were also giving it some bonus points. 

&nbsp;

We then restarted our benchmarks with the G5-based Quadra T1U cards based on the G5 chips to assess their performance. We also tested different transcoding strategies to get a high transcoding speed and a good density per server. The results matched our expectations and we successfully finalised these benchmarks with the best transcoding strategy adapted to our transcoding video pipeline.

&nbsp;

This decision marked a turning point in our infrastructure, opening doors to greater efficiency. With increased capacity and advanced encoding capabilities, we went into production.

&nbsp;

## How api.video reduced encoding costs with Quadra VPUs 

api.video used the T1U cards based on the G5 chips built by Netint Technologies. These cards are called VPUs (Video Processing Unit). Let's understand the costs that come with them when we consider a 1080p30 video. To simplify the case, I will assume the source video codec is h.264. The output videos after transcoding will be five h.264 renditions for ABR: 1080p30, 720p30, 480p30, 360p30, 240p30.

&nbsp;
 
For a real time transcoding, let's try to sum up the number of MP/s (Megapixel per second) it represents. For the above output, it represents 62 MP/s + 28 MP/s + 12MP/s + 7MP/s + 3MP/s respectively for 1080p30, 720p30, 480p30, 360p30, 240p30 renditions. 

&nbsp;

We need an encoding capacity of 112 MP/s for real time transcoding. Let us assume that the transcoding cost on VPUs is proportional to the number of pixels per frame (whatever the frame resolution) for the sake of simplicity and one VPU of Netint is able to encode 2000 MP/s in h.264. In reality it is a bit more complex but let’s take these as the numbers for a rough idea.

&nbsp;
 
Now, as per the above assumptions, we can encode 2000/112 = 17 minutes of videos (all rendition included) per minute. Below is a table summarizing the minute cost for a server with 4 VPUs. The cost of the server is $10k and the amortization for such a server is 3 years. 

&nbsp;

The electricity cost will be approx. $1000 per year (420w at $0.30 / kWh) at full consumption. Let us see what is the cost of 1 minute of a 1080p30 video transcoded to 5 renditions.

If we use the server at only 0.5% per day (i.e ~7 min per day fully loaded) the cost per minute would be at $0,020.

&nbsp;
 
If on an average, this server is loaded at 25% (6 hours a day fully loaded) the cost per minute would be 1/100 of our previous price.

So, even at 5% utilization, the cost per video is immaterial, allowing us to make the strategic decision to offer transcoding services at no charge to our customers.

&nbsp;

## What about video quality?

In the past, hardware encoders were associated with lower-quality video, but tests performed by us prove that this isn’t the case with the Quadra VPU. Specifically, we encoded a 1080p30 version of the movie Caminandes 2 via our API and compared output quality with a video encoded with FFmpeg and the x264 codec using the following command string.

&nbsp;

**ffmpeg -r 30 -y -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -force_key_frames 'expr:gte(t,n_forced*4)' -b:v 4400k -preset medium -c:a copy output.mp4**

&nbsp;

As shown in the table below, [we compared the two videos](https://api.video/blog/product-updates/video-encoding-numbers/) using well-known quality metrics VMAF, PSNR, and SSIM. The scores are all extremely close, with the VPU-encoded video edging FFmpeg in VMAF scoring and the reverse for PSNR and SSIM. Given the closeness of the scores, however, it’s clear that no viewer would notice the difference.

To summarize, api.video builds its own infrastructure so that we can take advantage of the right technology to offer the best to our customers. We can pack a lot of VPUs in a single server which increases transcoding capacity and reduces the power consumption and the number of servers by an order of magnitude.

Scaling up: How api.video empowers enterprises with advanced assistance

We're excited to announce the launch of a highly requested feature: **Workspaces**.

Anyone can now share their [api.video dashboard](https://dashboard.api.video/login) with a colleague or client. It's a great way to involve stakeholders in your projects.
Workspaces enable the primary account owner to invite unlimited team members to their dashboard securely, so they can help with video integration or add video content.

The new feature will allow multiple users to share videos and collaborate under the same roof, with a unique API key and unique billing.

## Why would I want to share my api.video dashboard?

### Manage different clients
You are an agency, and you need a separate api.video accounts to facilitate usage and billing management.

You can set up a different Workspace for each client as an account holder.
To do so, create a new workspace, give it a name, and add billing information.

### Integrate video in my app, website, or software

You need to integrate on-demand video or live stream into your app or software. By inviting your dev team to your Workspace, they will access the API key and all features included in your plan. 

You can easily give team members access to your Workspace. This is helpful if you typically have more than one person working with you on video content and development.

## Owners vs. Members

'Owner'status is automatically assigned to the user who created the organization. All new invited users are ‘Members.’

Owners and members have the same access rights. The owner cannot be removed from the Workspace. However, the owner can transfer his Workspace to another member.

Once you’ve invited a user to your Workspace, they can edit any video content and access the API key. Invitees will only have access to the Workspace from where the invite was sent. If you would like a user to have access to different workspaces, you will need to invite them to each one. 

As an account holder, you have access to everything except team members’ personal Workspaces.


## Receiving invoice emails

The workspace Admin will receive an invoice email monthly.
